Tempe Community Profile: Tempe is an urban community located in the center of the Phoenix metropolitan region, bordered by Phoenix on the west, Scottsdale on the north, Mesa on the east, & Chandler on the south. Tempe’s central location is enhanced by an extensive freeway network that provides access to & from these surrounding communities. Arizona State University, with a main campus of over 44,000 students located in Tempe, is the fourth largest Research I public university in the nation. ASU is a research institution, well-known for its engineering & business colleges. ASU professors, staff, & researchers have played an important role in contributing to Tempe’s considerable educational & cultural resources.

Principal Economic Activities:

Tempe has a strong, diversified economy featuring: manufacturing base of more than 750 firms; home of the “Tech Oasis,” a cluster of over 200 high tech companies; and other growing industries including bio-technology, financial and business services. Real estate is booming in the office, industrial and retail markets. The city, in partnership with private industry has developed a town lake and the Rio Salado Project. The lake provides recreational, cultural and office opportunities.

Scenic Attractions:

Downtown Tempe is a regional entertainment center with live music, restaurants, boutiques, cafes, theater & film. It combines historic buildings with modern architecture. Annual spring & fall Festival of the Arts draws tens of thousands to Downtown Tempe. ASU’s Gammage Auditorium, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, seats 3,000 & hosts first-class productions. The Nelson Fine Arts Center has excellent collections of early American, Mexican & ceramic arts. Rio Salado Town Lake & Tempe Beach Park both offer boat tours/rentals. Tempe is home to ASU’s Sun Devils & host to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl & Anaheim Angels for Spring Training.

Community Facilities:

Tempe has two libraries, three museums, 48 parks, six indoor theaters, five golf courses, four swimming pools, and numerous basketball, racquetball, baseball, soccer, volleyball and tennis courts. The Escalante Multigenerational Community Center, and the Warner-Hardy Athletic Complex.
